“American Identity and Its Representations Today” Poznań, October 14th-15th, 2011

CALL FOR PAPERS

Dear Colleagues,

We are happy to announce that the Conference will take place in Poznań on October 14th-15th, 2011 (Friday-Saturday). The Conference is organized by Samuel B. Linde College of Modern Languages (WSJO). The venue for the event will be the main building of WSJO at Piekary 5.

During the Conference we will consider the issue of identity (personal, collective, ethnic, gender and sexual), identity politics and (its) representations in contemporary American media, literature and other cultural texts.

The Conference keynote speaker will be Professor Elwood Watson from East Tennessee State University. He specializes in the 20th Century Post World War II U.S History, African American History, African American Studies, Gender Studies, Popular Culture and ethnographic studies. He is the author of Outsiders Within: Black Women in the Legal Academy After Brown v. Board  (2008), the editor of Searching The Soul of Ally McBeal: Critical Essays, and co-editor of The Politics of Sex, Beauty and Race in America’s Most Famous Pageant and The Oprah Phenomenon.


The abstracts (200 words) should be sent by e-mail to konferencjawsjo@gmail.com, by September 1st, 2011.

The Conference fee is 25 Euro, or 100 PLN.

Wyższa Szkoła Języków Obcych im. Samuela Bogumiła Lindego w Poznaniu zaprasza chętnych do wzięcia udziału w Konferencji Naukowej na temat “American Identity and Its Representations Today”, która odbędzie się w dniach 14-15 października 2011.

Przedmiotem rozważań w trakcie Konferencji będzie szeroko pojęta polityka tożsamości – jednostkowej, zbiorowej, etnicznej, genderowej czy seksualnej – oraz jej przedstawienia we współczesnych amerykańskich mediach, literaturze oraz innych tekstach kultury.

Gościem specjalnym Konferencji będzie historyk Elwood Watson z Uniwersytetu Stanowego East Tennessee, który zajmuje się powojenną historią Stanów Zjednoczonych, studiami afroamerykańskimi i genderowymi, etnografią oraz kulturą popularną. Elwood Watson jest autorem  książki Outsiders Within: Black Women in the Legal Academy After Brown v. Board  (2008), redaktorem antologii Searching The Soul of Ally McBeal: Critical Essays a także współredaktorem dwóch antologii: There She Is, Miss America: The Politics of Sex, Beauty and Race in America’s Most Famous Pageant oraz The Oprah Phenomenon. Obecnie pracuje m.in. nad antologią tekstów z dziedziny studiów nad męskością.

Wszystkich zainteresowanych wzięciem udziału w Konferencji prosimy o przesyłanie abstraktów w języku angielskim (ok. 200 słów) na adres: konferencjawsjo@gmail.com    w terminie do 01 września 2011. Referaty zostaną opublikowane w tomie pokonferencyjnym, który ukaże się nakładem wydawnictwa Wyższej Szkoły Języków Obcych im. Samuela Bogumiła Lindego.

Opłata konferencyjna wynosi 100 PLN lub 25 Euro.
